“Maria captures details invisible to the human eye, creating works of art of extraordinary beauty. Her creations always seek a balance between the past and the present, between history and mythology”…

“Reading Maria’s artist statement make some think that she is interested in thinking about and capturing the human condition. Her use of a slow shutter in this series (Dysmorphia) helps capture more than one aspect of the human condition in a single photograph. Many emotions are layered, sometimes even those that feel contradictory to each other now co-exist together. Her photograph contains layers of time. Be it present, past or the future. A sad and beautiful view of ‘ourselves’.”

ARTIST STATEMENT
Maria Christidi is a Cypriot visual artist whose work explores the intersections of mythology, identity and emotion through experimental lens-based practices. Deeply influenced by Greek history and mythology, her work reinterprets ancient narratives through a contemporary, feminist lens, transforming them into personal reflections on the human condition.
Working primarily with photography, video and hybrid techniques, Christidi continuously pushes the boundaries of photographic media. Her practice often merges digital and physical processes, incorporating archival imagery, material interventions and performative elements to create layered works that blur the line between documentation and expression. Through this approach, she redefines what photography can be: not a record of reality, but a space where memory, myth and self-perception converge.
Recent projects such as Hysteria, Hedone and Gaia delve into the complexities of womanhood, body politics and emotional inheritance. Drawing from both personal experience and collective history, Christidi transforms themes of repression, desire and vulnerability into poetic visual languages. Her hybrid images often fragmented, tactile and emotionally charged invite viewers to navigate the delicate balance between control and chaos, intimacy and exposure.
At the core of her practice lies a fascination with transformation, how myth becomes memory, how emotion becomes material and how photography itself can transcend its own boundaries. Through this evolving exploration, Maria Christidi continues to question how identity is constructed, performed and ultimately reimagined through the act of seeing.
