ARTIST STATEMENT

Maria Christidi is a Cypriot visual artist whose work explores the intersections of mythology, identity and emotion through experimental lens-based practices. Deeply influenced by Greek history and mythology, her work reinterprets ancient narratives through a contemporary, feminist lens, transforming them into personal reflections on the human condition.

Working primarily with photography, video and hybrid techniques, Christidi continuously pushes the boundaries of photographic media. Her practice often merges digital and physical processes, incorporating archival imagery, material interventions and performative elements to create layered works that blur the line between documentation and expression. Through this approach, she redefines what photography can be: not a record of reality, but a space where memory, myth and self-perception converge.

Recent projects such as Hysteria, Hedone and Gaia delve into the complexities of womanhood, body politics and emotional inheritance. Drawing from both personal experience and collective history, Christidi transforms themes of repression, desire and vulnerability into poetic visual languages.
